Auction 2019 Fund a Need: Roofs for Linden and San Juan Halls
The roofs of our primary activity buildings – Linden Hall and San Juan Hall - at Sacramento Waldorf School are aging and need to be replaced. The two buildings continue to serve us well, and maintaining their integrity enhances their value to the school. Raising funds through our 2019 Auction “Fund a Need” campaign provides an opportunity to avert expenditure of important reserve funds.
What is the need?
Roofs on both buildings are showing significant signs of aging and causing additional problems as a result of leaks during rainstorms.
The Linden Hall roof was installed in 1995 and the roofing materials are worn out and disintegrating. During rainstorms, there are many leaks that require buckets and tarps to collect water inside the building. Ceiling tiles have been damaged and some have fallen. Interior systems and equipment - such as sound proofing - have been damaged as a result. Dry rot is extensive and will need to be evaluated and addressed.
The San Juan Hall roof now has two layers of composition shingles which are disintegrating. In 2018, a large tree limb fell on the roof and damaged it in multiple places. Leaks resulted in damage to trim and other woodwork. Damage has been patched with metal sheeting and sealant, but these are not permanent fixes.
What is the cost?
Replacing the roof on Linden Hall will cost approximately $65,000. Replacing the San Juan Hall roof is quoted at $10,500. Re-roofing the two buildings in tandem will enable some efficiency with labor for dry rot repairs in particular. The total cost to repair both roofs is estimated to be $80,000.
What will the impact be?
Linden Hall is our primary school activity space, comprising more than 10,000 square feet. It is used year-round for sports games and practices, classes, performances, events, after school and summer programs, and much more. Linden Hall includes the following spaces:
* Full-sized gym,
* High quality performance stage,
* Movement room,
* Classrooms for orchestra and drama,
* Lobby, snack bar, and bathrooms,
* Building/grounds and athletic staff offices, and
* Costume, drama props, and instrument storage areas
San Juan Hall is our daily eurythmy room, regular meeting space, small performance hall, and much more.
Re-roofing these facilities will protect the integrity of these buildings, what they house in terms of equipment, and ensure our ability to continue using them for our broad and varied school activities. Raising money for this need from our Auction allows the school's reserve funds to be used for other purposes.
